At our last monthly meeting, two exciting new project groups were formed:
- Social Housing project group
- Non-Coercive Practice project group
The social housing project group is looking to into options for housing for people with experience of mental health issues, in the context of huge housing (especially social housing) shortages in post-earthquake Christchurch. The housing shortage is particularly hitting the mental health community hard, and this has been a focus of recent news coverage.
The Non-Coercive Practise group has grown out of discussion around the use of ECT in Canterbury and the South Island more broadly, particularly in non-consensual situations. The group aims to raise awareness of the traumatic experiences people have of forced ECT, and promote practise that is more collaborative and less coercive on the whole.
If either of these projects sound like something you would like to be involved in, or know more about, please feel free to get in touch by phone at (03) 366 8288 or by emailing us at awareness(at)mhaps.org.nz.
